DOA is a martial arts tournament where the world's best fighters participate in a contest, where combatants faces each other on a mysterious island, where the loser who gets knocked-out will be forced to leave the island and return home. And the winner will be moved on the next match. Three female fighters are chosen to take part in DOA: Christie Allen, a sexy jewel thief, Tina Armstrong, a tough-as-nails pro-wrestler and Kasumi, a Ninja princess. Once arriving on the island after jumping out of their airplane with parachutes, Christie, Tina and Kasumi finds they aren't just fighting for the championship, they find themselves up against Tornament master Donovan, the previous tournament master's teenage daughter Helena Douglas is also taking part in DOA to honor her father's legacy, Kasumi has left her kingdom to find what happened to her brother who mysteriously disappeared at the tournament a year ago, Tina is taking part to prove she isn't a fake and Christie and her lover Maximillian Marsh bid to break into a vault on the island. But Donovan has his own agenda and has other plans for the female fighters.
The world's best fighters are invited to DOA, an invitational martial arts contest. There, four female rival fighters will have to work together to uncover the secret that the organizer of the tournament is trying to hide.
I cannot help it, I simply love this movie. Sure, it's stupid. It's oh so stupid. On the surface, and really, deep down as well, it's nothing more than needless fanboy pandering. It's hot chicks in skimpy bikinis jumping and gyrating as they attempt to punch the lights out of one another. Oh, and there's an evil bad guy attempting to take over the world and the hot chicks in skimpy bikinis have to stop it. Or something, I honestly didn't pay too much attention.
But it's just so much fun! So, let me enjoy my smut, just this once. Sure, it's demeaning to my intellect, sure it's brainless, sure it makes little to no sense. But, then again, it's not like the original video game was any better. It was hot chicks in skimpy bikinis, you guessed it, jumping and gyrating. You could even argue that this is one of the more accurate and faithful video game adaptations there is.
Plus, the movie honestly looks great. All the actors look phenomenal, it's bright and colourful all around, the fight choreographs are amazing, the camera work is actually pretty impressive and all around I have no complains on the technical side of things. I kind of wish the second half of the movie was as much fun as the first, but I guess they had to at least try to have something resembling a story. Not that people are going to watch this movie for its story, but they had to try.
DOA is a great deal of fun. It's dumb, but harmless, and immensely entertaining. If you're a red-blooded male, you will find something worthwhile in it. ...I didn't have high expectations to begin with, but this is a pure cheesy popcorn flick with some laughs and lots and lots of eye-candy.
With that said, there are a few things that I absolutely hated in the movie (I might be nitpicking): ***Minor Spoilers*** 1) You got Helena, Christie, Kasumi, Tina, and Ayane. Why isn't Lei-Fang part of the DOA girl squad? Lei-Fang is one of my favorite characters in the game, and she was there for a full three minutes of the movie. Got eliminated in the first round. To top it off...the actress who played Lei-Fang looked like she was 40 years old! WHY?! Sure, Zhang Ziyi probably wasn't available...but...WHAT A WASTE! 2) Although the fighting was decent, I expected more from Corey Yuen. Sure, he's no Yuen Woo Ping in my opinion, but I think he could've done better, especially for the scenes with Hayabusa. Anyone who's played "Ninja Gaiden" would understand. Hayabusa's fight scenes were alright, but nothing spectacular. The same can go for Hayate (Collin Chou, who plays Seraph in the Matrix Trilogy), who's underused in DOA.
3) And finally, last but not least, Devon Aoki. Wow, if anything she's the worst actor/actress in the movie. NO facial expressions whatsoever. And she's not that great looking either...
...On the other hand Holly Valance is incredibly HOT HOT HOT as Christie. But my favorite DOA: Movie girl is hands-down Natassia Malthe as Ayane. Holly maybe be hot, but Natassia is absolutely beautiful in this movie. It's a pity her character Ayane got about ten minutes of screen time and five whole lines.
I give it a 6/10. The action has more to do with digital effects than true martial artistry, and is targeted squarely at adolescent boys too young to rent porn and gamers too lazy to yank their own joysticks.
